I don’t want to do Hifz anymore. Can you advise me?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am a male child that is currently enrolled in the hifz program at my local musallah. I am baligh and one of the older children in my class. I started doing full time hifz about 3 or 4 months ago instead of enrolling for the junior year of high school. I initially enrolled because my dad had forced me, but about 1 or 2 months in I think my intention had cleared up and i was doing it for the sake of Allah (swt). My typical new lesson each day is about 10-11 lines of my 15 line quran.

Recently, about 3 weeks ago roughly, a younger child in my class had taken my mobile phone and was playing some game on it at the end of the day without my realizing, and when my teacher found out he confiscated my phone for a week. Since I got it back that day, he said i was getting it back witht he condition that I must start bringing 15 lines or a page daily or else i will not receieve it back by the end of the day. Our typical day is about 9 hours from 8am to 5pm maghrib time, and i spend about 2-3 hours working at home as well on the hifz.

I am honestly trying to get up to a page but i am unable to. I am starting to lose my motivation, and i feel like the only reason i even put any effort in anymore is to try to get my phone back. Im confused, and ive already given up a year of high school to sign up for this, and most of my friends, even though they dont directly say it, i can see they think im wasting my life too. My dad wont really work with me even though he claims he will support me in this, and he wont speak to my teacher on my behalf, as whenever i try to speak to my teacher myself he claims he will consider my suggestion or something, but he never does.

I dont even do the class for Allah (swt) anymore and i feel bad about it because i know in my heart my intention is completely wrong. I really want to quit the school now and i dont want to do hifz anymore, can you give me any advice please?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The memorization of the Qur’an is a great bounty of Allah for which Allah chose you. You state initially you were forced and now again you are experiencing difficulty.

Dear son, if Allah has deemed for you to be among the fortunate ones to have the Qur’an in your chest and live with the Qur’an, Allah will create all the means for you to become a Hafiz and Allah will remove the obstacles you face. You should focus on how fortunate you are to be chosen by Allah. See the following Ahadith on the virtue of a Hafiz of the Qur’an.

Translation: Abdullah ibn Amr (Radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Nabi () is reported to have mentioned: “It will be said to the one who memorized the Qur’an ‘Recite, and rise up, recite melodiously as you would recite melodiously in the world. For indeed your rank (abode) shall be at the last Ayah you recited. (Abu Dawud)

Translation: Uthman ibn Affan (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Nabi () is reported to have mentioned: “The best amongst you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.  (Bukhari)

Translation: Mua’dh Al-Juhani (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Nabi () is reported to have mentioned: “If anyone recites the Qur’an and acts according to its content, on the Day of Judgement his parents will be given to wear a crown whose light is better than the light of the sun in the houses of this world if it were among you. So what do you think of him who acts according to it?   (Abu Dawud)

Translation: A’isha (Radhiyallahu Anha) narrates that Nabi () is reported to have said: “Such a person who recites the Qur’an and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribe. And such a person who exerts himself to learn the Qur’an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.”  (Bukhari)

Translation: Abu Umamah Al-Bahiliy (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that I heard Nabi () saying: “Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It”   (Muslim)

The issue of the cellphone should be viewed in a positive light. It is a means to jolt your progress. Your Ustadh cares for your progress and made such a suggestion. If he didn’t care for you, why would he put such a condition?

You try your level best to memorize the recommended amount of 15 lines. Bear in mind, Allah says:

Indeed, We have made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember.

(Surah Al- Qamar- Ayah 17)

If you put in a little effort, you will get used to the idea of memorizing the daily lesson and as you proceed, it will become easier for you.

Dear son, we reiterate, Allah loves you. Allah chose you. Put your heart and soul on memorizing the Qur’an. You will be an asset to the Ummah through the Qur’an.

The book referred below is: A Guide to Memorizing the Qur’an.

The author offers many essential tips and they have proven to be extremely beneficial in assisting those becoming Huffaz. We advise you to read it and spread it to others so they may benefit as well.
