The date of Mi’raj

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is there any conclusive evidence to suggest that the 27th night of Rajab is the night of Mi’raj?

Answer

The 27th of Rajab is popular among the masses, and is indeed the view of some Scholars. Therefore it cannot be discredited totally.

However, it is important to note that he ‘Ulama have differed extensively concerning the exact date of Mi’raj. It is therefore difficult to confirm one particular date.

From the Muhaddithun (Hadith Masters), Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) has mentioned that there exists more than ten views regarding the exact date of Mi’raj.

(Fathul Bari, vol.7 pgs.254-255, Hadith:3887

Among the Mufassirun, (commentators of the Holy Quraan) ‘Allamah Al-Qurtubi (rahimahullah) only quoted the view of Rabi’ul Akhir.

(Tafsir Qurtubi, vol.5 pg.551)

Mufti Muhammad Shafi sahib (rahimahullah) also cited this view only and then said: “The Muhaddithun have not preferred any specific date although the 27th of Rajab is famous.

(Ma’ariful Quran, vol.5 pg.443 also see: Sirat-e-Mustafa, vol.1 pg.288)

Hafiz Ibn ‘Abdil Barr (rahimahullah) has quoted the view of Rajab and ‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) chose this view in Ar-Raudah.

(‘Umdatul Qari, vol.17 pg.20 and Fathul Bari, vol.7 pg.255)

However, in his fatawa and his commentary of Sahih Muslim he (Al-Nawawi- rahimahullah) has preferred the view of Rabi’ul Aakhir and in some copies: Rabi’ul Awwal.

(Sharhul Mawahib, vol.2 pg.71)

From the above it is clear that as Mufti Shafi (rahimahullah) has stated, no specific date has been confirmed. This has also been echoed by Mufti Muhammad Taqi sahib in his book: Islamic months.

One should be aware of the fact that there exists such varied opinions on this issue.

My Bukhari teacher, Al-Muhaddith Shaykh Fadlur Rahman A’zami (may Allah protect him) writes in a brief article on the topic of Mi’raj:

‘The crux of the matter is simply this: It is impossible to state conclusively that Mi’raj occurred on any particular date.’

In the view of this writer, based on the above it is important to note the extensive disagreement on the exact date, without discrediting what is popular, since that too is one legitimate view.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
