I Read Somewhere That Masturbation Breaks a Fast But Only Necessitates Qadha?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

As salamualaikum sheykh,

I have a question that’s arose when looking for an answer to another question. I have been taught that when you break a fast intentionally you have to pay kaffarah. But I think I read somewhere that masturbation breaks a fast but only necessitates qadha. Can you please help me as I am confused on this matter.

Jazakallah and may Allah the almighty increase your life with barakah and elevate your status. Ameen.

Answer:

Ameen Jazakallah for the duas, I’m in need of them.

The explanation is that kaffarah is a big thing. It can only become fardh when total pleasure is achieved. This is why if someone swallows stones or soil, his roza breaks, but no kaffarah.

Similarly, where there is sex with someone, the pleasure is complete so kaffarah is fardh. However, in the masturbation case the pleasure is naaqis (reduced), so only qaza of the roza will be fardh, not kaffarah.

Wassalam
