The Sunna Before the Friday Prayer & The Chopping Away of Islam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is there a sunnah prayer before jummah, besides tahayyatul masjid, or the sunnah for performing wudu?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

Definitely. In the Hanafi school, there are 4 confirmed sunna rakats before the Friday prayer and 4 confirmed sunna rakats after.

The sunna before the Friday prayer is also established in the Shafi`i school. [Reliance of the Traveller has a discussion on this point.]

It is from the unfortunate innovations of our age that we have minimalist literalists who not only perform the minimal amount possible of worship themselves, but insist that others not perform any extra worship. Wherever and whenever they can, they chop away at the worship and practices of the believers…

Often, they make sweet-sounding arguments. But its reality is all bitter. In the end, all safety lies in following the way of those before us: the way of the four sunni schools of fiqh in one’s actions; the way of Ash`ari and Maturidi aqida in one’s beliefs; the way of tasawwuf in one’s inner relation with Allah. This is the trodden path to Divine pleasure and love.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
