How to perform ghusl? do you sit in the bath to do ghusl in the water you are sitting in or is

How to perform ghusl? do you sit in the bath to do ghusl in the water you are sitting in or is a shower preferred?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

1. The complete sunna way of performing ghusl is attached.

2. It is superior to pour water over oneself—whether under a shower or using a jug or the like—rather than to sit in a tub full of water. The former uses less water, which the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) commended, and is also more effective in cleaning.

3. There are some subtle proprieties (adab) related to ghusl, that include:

covering one’s nakedness (from navel to knees, ideally, with something like a loose wrap-around), and sitting down (such as on a stool) while showering. Neither is an emphasized sunna, but are means of reward.

Both of these are an expression of one’s modesty (haya’) before Allah Most High. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Allah is most deserving of one’s modesty.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Maja, and Bukhari ta`liqan]

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
