Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah) explains true asceticism

Who is this statement attributed to?

“Asceticism is not only eating hard [bread] and wearing coarse clothing, but it is to curtail aspirations and to anticipate death”

Answer

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has cited this as the statement of Imam Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah).

(Siyaru A’alamin Nubala, vol. 7 pg. 243)

The Arabic wording of this statement is as follows:

ليس الزهد بأكل الغليظ ولبس الخشن، ولكنه قصر الأمل وارتقاب الموت

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
