Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuhu,

The ruling on money earned by a professional sportsman will be based upon the ruling of the sport itself. If the sport is permissible then the money earned is also permissible, otherwise not.

Our illustrious teacher, Mufti Saeed Motara explains that a sport will be permissible only if thw following conditions are met:

(1) The sport itself should not be made the objective. The objective should be exercise.

(2) The sport should not be prohibited by Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). For example, making animals fight amongst themselves.

(3) No law of Shari’ah should be transgressed whilst playing the sport. Example, Salah should not be missed, there should be no interaction with the opposite gender etc.

If these three conditions are fulfilled then playing the sport will be permissible.

In a proffessional cricket game, these three conditions are not fulfilled. There are many evils which take place. A few of them are: Missing of salaah, being distracted from the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala, intermingling of sexes, hero-worshipping, taking of photos appearing on T.V.,  advertising haraam products and many more. Therefore such sports are unlawful. (Aap Ke Masaa’iln pg. 330 / 7, Imdaadul-Muftiyyeen pg.1001/2).

Another point to consider is that many times a fee is paid at the beginning of the tournament. At the end of it the money is given to the winning team. This is gambling which is unlawful in Shari’ah.

Furthermore, many sports are sponsored by companies who sell unlawful products. The players are paid with money given by them which is unlawful.

Even if these last two facts are not found then too due to the reason mentioned above, the earnings from the sport is not permissible and therefore it is not permissible to use the money received from it. If the conditions are found then it will be permissible to play the sport and use the money received from it.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
