Someone else is listening to music and watching tv in front you

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

What if someone else is listening to music and watching television and you can’t tell them to stop, it would be still sinful for me?

Answer

Assalāmuʿālaykum Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]

Based on the prophetic tradition mentioned above, the first step would be to switch off the television and to switch off the music. However, if this cannot be done in that it may aggravate the situation with the person, then to talk him out of it using the correct approach and method according to the circumstances and relationship you have with him. When this too cannot be done, then the least would be to feel hurt inside that such a person is currently in the state of disobeying Allāh ﷻ, and to make Duʿā for his guidance.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
