Hadeeth showing number of rakaats for Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Question

Assalamu Alaikkum,,

Respected Ulema,

Is there is any hadeeth available in Siha sitta books, showing the number of Fardh rakaah of Five time namaz?

Answer

There are plenty of Ahaadeeth of this nature. Bukhari and Muslim narrate from Aisha radiallahu anha, who says: “Allah prescribed salah when he made it compulsory as two rakats, then the salah of iqamah was increased, and the salah of safar was kept upon its first pattern.”

It is narrated in Musnad Ahmad: “When Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam would be travelling he would perform two rakats for all except Maghrib, and when he would be at home he would increase two rakats except for Maghrib, because it has odd rakats, and except for Fajr, because it has lengthy recitation.”

Imam Nasai narrates: “Salah was made fardh as two rakats, then Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam migrated so it was made four, and the salah of journey was left as it was, i.e. two.”

Tabarani narrates from Salman radiallahu anhu: “Fardh salah was fixed in two units; Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam prayed two two while he was in Makkah, then when he came to Madinah he prayed the same for a period, then Allah increased the salah of the homeland and the salah of journey in its state.” (Jam’ul Fawaaid, vol. 1, p. 386)
