Zuhr Salah in congregation and the issues of pre- and post-fard sunnah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Sohail Hanif, SunniPath Academy Teacher

If one is praying a sunnah before the fard (e.g. zohar) and the iqamat is called you have to immediately stop and join the jammat, but what if you didn’t get to finish it, do you still have to make up for it after the fard?

Also, if one joined the jammat for zohar but missed the time to pray the sunnats before it, when the fard is finished does one first pray the 2 rakat sunnats for after zohar before making up for the 4 rakat sunnats for before zohar?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

Please see the answer below concerning cutting short the sunnas of dhuhr to join the group prayer.

There is a difference of opinion regarding whether it is superior to pray one’s pre-fard sunnas before one’s post-fard sunnas in the case where one prays the fard and was not able to pray the pre-fard sunnas first. Both opinions have been declared as correct and followable (sahih) as mentioned by al-Tahtawi [2:47, Hashiya al-Tahtawi ‘ala Maraqi al-Falah, maktaba al-‘ilm al-hadith]. What imam al-Shurunbulali appears to prefer in Maraqi al-Falah is that it is superior to pray the pre-fard sunnas first and then pray the post-fard sunnas [ibid].
