Is My Job Halaal, etc?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Dear Imam,

Assalamualaikum,

I have some problems they are as follows,  I need your kind advice.

1. I am a Software Engineer. I have been appointed to work on a project which is related to Music. It is a website which conducts surveys as for the popularity of Music items. Is this Halaal? If it is not Halaal what should I do? You can find more information about this website @ www.songpeople.com. Please advise me.

2. Is it good to wish someone well on his/her birthday not for the birthday but for life

3. @ home everyone borrows money from me but most of the time they

don’t return it back. I feel very unsettled feeling that money is just being spent without me using it for a fruitful purpose. It’s true that I earn but I also try to save & always pay by Zakaat or Sadaqah .. what should I do ? should I allow them to continue this way with me ? should I ask what they owe to me back. Most of the time they waste their own & turn to me to give them please imam advise me in Allah’s path

Answer:

1) By working on this project you are in actual fact assisting the promotion of music, which is totally Haraam in Islam. Allah (S.W.T.) has mentioned that: “And co-operate with each other in righteousness and piety and do not aid each other upon vice and transgression. And fear Allah; no doubt Allah is severe in afflicting.” (Surah Ma’edah, Verse 2)

It is therefore unlawful for you to work on this project.

2) It is permissible to wish someone well and make Du’aa for his/her health and Imaan on their birthday. (Fataawaa Rahimiyyah, Page 554)

3) You should approach each one of them and ask them to repay you. This is best for all of you.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
