Is this Job Halaal?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

Dear Respected Ulamaa

I’m studying computer science at university and it is usual for 2nd year students to get work experience by participating in internship schemes, which are run over the summer holidays. It is purely optional and does not form part of the course, but provides relevant work experience, which is advantageous to attaining graduate employment. I’ve applied to a number of companies, and have by the grace of Allah been offered a summer internship position at Citigroup in London, which is an investment bank. I’ll be working in the Technology division of Citibank which is a company of Citigroup, for a period of 12 weeks. The work is paid and will involve developing software for the company, specific details of which are not yet available. Citibank is a retail bank and sells many interest related financial products like mortgages, loans etc. However, I will not be directly involved in interest transactions. My intention is to obtain work experience and use the money to send my younger sister and brother to an Islamic school. Also, I do not have any intentions of working there full time after graduation. Is this Halaal work experience and Halaal income according to the Shari’ah?

May Allah reward you abundantly in the Dunyaa and Aakhirah for your service to His deen and your service to His slaves.

Jazakumullahu khairan Katheerah

If this developing software work does not contain an interest bearing transaction, then you are allowed to do it. The money acquired through it is not Haraam and can therefore be used for the assistance of your younger brother and sister.
