Question:
Assalamualaikum
Is music Halaal? Could you reply in detail?
Wassalaam
Answer:
The unlawfulness of music has been proven from various traditions of our beloved Nabi (S.A.W.), a few of which are stated below.
The harms of music are innumerable and detrimental to ones daily life and spiritual progress. It is for this reason that Islam has shown no form of significance towards it. Nabi (S.A.W.) himself expressed great displeasure if any interest was shown towards it.
The most harmful aspect of music is that it causes one to become unmindful of ones duties, Shar’i duties as well as worldly responsibilities. It instils in the heart the desire to commit shameful acts. It promotes Zina, the consuming of drugs, alcohol etc. and disobedience to ones parents and elders.
Nabi (S.A.W.) has mentioned: “Music creates hypocrisy in the heart.”
Hypocrisy naturally causes one to become lethargic as far as Salaah and other Shar’i duties are concerned.
Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A.) is reported to have said: “Protect yourselves from listening to music and the sounds made by musical instruments.”
From the above explanation it is quite evident as to why the Shari’ah has rendered all forms of music as Haram. (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 9, Page 502-503, Islam Aur Musiqy, Page 63-70, Jadeed Fiqhi Masaail, Vol. 1, Page 348-349)
