Sin is what troubles the conscience

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Please give the reference for this hadith;

‘Sin is that which agitates the conscience.’

Answer

Sayyiduna Nawwas ibn Sam’an (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that he asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) about piety and sin, to which he said:

‘Piety is [mainly made up of] good character, and sin is that which troubles the heart and you dislike that others become aware of it.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 6463)

‘Allamah Qurtubi (rahimahullah) mentions that the heart that is referred to here is that which has acquired the light (nur) of Iman and the knowledge of Islam.

A sinner’s conscience is not considered in this case.

(Al-Mufhim, Hadith: 2460)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
