Du’a for protection, recited by Shaykh Ja’far As-Sadiq (rahimahullah)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is this du’a authentic?

What is the incident behind it? If you could provide the translation also, it will be appreciated.

Answer

Imam Ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded an incident which mentions that once Shaykh Ja’far As-Sadiq (rahimahullah) was summoned by the ruler who had resolved to kill Shaykh Ja’far (rahimahullah).

Ja’far As-Sadiq had recited this du’a and the conditions were reversed completely.

(Al-Faraj ba’dash Shiddah, Hadith: 75)

There are several narrators in the chain that I was unable to identify in the popular biographies of Hadith narrators. I therefore cannot comment on the chain.

Translation

O Allah watch over me with Your Eye that doesn’t sleep, support me with Your strength which never falls, forgive me through the power You have over me, You have no [need for] family and You are my hope, O Allah how many bounties you favored me for which I show little appreciation, how many adverse conditions You tested me with yet I showed little patience, O The One who has little appreciation from me for His bounties but didn’t deprive me, O The One who saw little patience from me for His tests yet didn’t give up on me, O The One who sees my sins but doesn’t expose me, O The Bestower of favours which never expire, O The Possessor of bounties that can never be counted, I ask You to shower mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, through Your help I repel the harms from his [the ruler’s] neck , I seek Your protection from his [the ruler’s] evil, O Allah assist my din via my dunya and my hereafter via my taqwa, protect me from those things which are hidden from me, don’t leave me dependant on myself in those things which are before me, O The One whom sins don’t harm, nor does His forgiveness decrease, forgive me since that doesn’t harm You and grant me that which doesn’t decrease You, indeed You are the Giver. I ask You for a quick relief, a beautiful patience, abundance of sustenance and well being from all calamities and appreciation of well being.

Note 1: Despite the chain being unverified as yet, the words of this supplication are indeed profound, which may be recited as a general du’a.

Note 2: The part in bold appears as part of a lengthy du’a reported from Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) in Tabarani’s Kitabud Du’a and Al-Firdaws of Daylami.
