‘Do not feed our children Haram’

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is the following narration reliable?:

:كانت المرأة من الصحابة إذا خرج زوجها في الصباح لطلب الرزق تقول له
يا أبو فلان، اتق الله فينا، ولا تأتنا إلا بالحلال الطيب، فإنا نصبر على الجوع ولا نصبر على حر نار جهنم

Answer

Translation:

The wives of the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) would tell their husbands when they left in the mornings to earn a livelihood:

‘Fear Allah for our sake and do not  feed us anything but pure halal. We can bare the pangs of hunger, but not the heat of the fire of Jahannam.’

I have not seen this being reported from the wives of the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) as is in your question.

However, Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) has cited the exact words from the wives of our predecessors (salaf).

(See Sharhul Ihya, vol.5 pg.404 and Risalatul Mustarshidin, pg.216)

‘Allamah Zabidi (rahimahullah) comments that this shows the high level of piety of the women of the past.
