Did Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) slaughter the damm shukr on behalf of his wives?

In the following narration recorded in Sahih Muslim (1211):

أهدى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن نسائه البقر

Does this refer to Damm Shukr?

Answer

The version quoted in your question is recorded in Sahih Muslim. ‘أهدى’ refers to damm shukr.

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded the word ‘نَحَرَ’ instead of ‘أهدى’ which means Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) carried out the udhiyah [qurbani] on behalf of his wives.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1709)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has preferred the version in Sahih Muslim [i.e Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) carried out the damm shukr] and says that is seems like one of the narrators changed the words (i.e. الرواية بالمعنى).

He also cites another Hadith which supports this meaning.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1709. Also see: Fathul Mulhim, Hadith: 2894)

Other commentators have offered different explanations.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
