The response of the souls to the call of Hajj

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is this reliable?

“When Allah commanded Ibrahim (‘alayhis salam) to announce to the people to perform Hajj, he stood up on the maqam and said: ‘O worshippers of Allah, answer the call of your Lord.’ So the [souls of the] people said: ‘We are here O Lord, we are here.’ So whoever from the creations performs Hajj, he is among those who answers the call of Ibrahim (‘alayhis salam).”

Answer

There are several versions of this that are recorded as the statements of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) as well as some Tabi’un.

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir Tabari, Surah Haj, Verse: 27. Also see Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 32486, Mustadrak Hakim, vol.2 pg.388 and Al-Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 1127)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has stated that the chains for these are strong.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1550)
