Q: What happens to a soul when someone dies? Moreover when we say we return to Allah what does that mean?

Bismillaah

A: The journey towards the hereafter commences after death. The souls of the pious are sent to a place of happiness and peace called illiyyeen and the souls of the evil doers are sent to a place of punishment called sijjeen. Returning to Allah Ta’ala after death means gaining a special type of proximity with Him.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
