Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh respected Mufti.

What is the ruling of wearing a turban (imaamah)? Is it sunnah mu’akkadah?

Jazak Allahu khayran.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Concerning the Turban, Hadhrat Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Mawlānā Muḥammad Zakarriyā Khandalwi (R.A) has written the following in his commentary of ‘Shamāil Tirmidhi, “Khaṣāil-e-Nabawi”:

“The tying of the turban is a “Sunnat-e-Mustamirrah” (perpetually adhered to practice of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has enjoined the tying of the turban upon us. It has been reported: “Tie the turban. It will increase you in forbearance” (Fatḥul Bāri)

It is also reported that somebody enquired of Hazrat Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) whether the tying of the turban was Sunnah or not. He replied in the affirmative.

It is reported in one ḥadith that Nabi (Sallallahu AlaihiWasallam) said: “Wear the turban as it is a sign of Islām and distinguishes between a Muslim and Kāfir”
(The above extract is from Khaṣāil an-Nabawi Pg. 6;8)
