Gold cutlery

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Is it permissible to eat with cutlery that is gold in colour

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Do not drink from silver or gold utensils, and do not eat in plates made from them, for they are for them (the disbelievers) in this world and for us in the hereafter. [Bukhārī and Muslim]

Based on the aforementioned prophetic tradition, it is not permissible to use cutlery made from gold and silver for eating.

If they are merely gold or silver in colour but not made from actual gold or silver, then it will be permissible.

We, however, advise using one’s hands for eating where possible, as this is Sunnah and more rewarding.
