Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

It is important to study the basics with a teacher, and thereafter atleast have him coach you through the other books. If there is no Maliki scholar available in your community and you are unable to travel, see if you can get someone to teach you online.

In the very unlikely situation that you are unable to formally study under a teacher, you may read these books, but keep in contact with a Maliki scholar to explains portions which are difficult.

We are not well-versed within the Maliki Madhab, and our readings are very limited. Nevertheless, we suggest that you start with the Tuhfa al-Mubtadi and then read Matn of al-Akhdari, and al-Murshid al-Mu’in of Ibn ‘Ashir, with the commentary: al-Durr al-Thamin.

After these two books, move on to the Risalah of Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani.

If you read the Muatta and Mudawwanah al-Kubra at this stage, you will appreciate them more.

You may now read al-Khalil with the Hashiyah of Dasuqi. You may also read Mawahib al-Jalil and al-Mawahib al-Laduniyyah..

With that you can read al-Dhakhirah fi Furu’-il-Malikiyyah of ‘Allamah al-Qarafi.

It is also good to read Mi’yar al-Mu’rib of Wansharisi and al-Mi’yar al-Jadid of Mahdi Wazzani.

Please do confirm the above list with a Maliki scholar.

Kindly refer to the following link for some books within the Maliki Madhab:
