Haram in Jobs are not avoidable.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

In most jobs Haram is not avoidable. For example I , but most of the time the websites need to have music or women with hair showing, or the video games have music and are made to be addictive, or the software might have music etc. What should I do?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

You only mentioned some of what could be done as a computer programmer. Besides what you mentioned, you may also create codes for software applications, programs and operating systems which do not contravene the laws of Shari’ah. There are thousands of websites which do not feature any of what you mentioned.

In any job and business, a person has the choice to only focus on what is impermissible, or to carry it out in a way that is compatible with Islam. The person has the choice of conducting his business in a Haram manner, or in a Halal manner.

Since you only ‘plan’ to become computer programmer, speak to Muslims who are already qualified working in that industry. Ask them how are they conducting their jobs. Do more research and see which field you can go into, that you may conduct in a way that you do not have to compromise your religion.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
