Eating Langoustines

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: Is it permissible to eat langoustines according to hanafis?

A: According to the Hanafi School, from amongst all the sea creatures only fish is permissible to consume. Hence, that which is not classified as a fish is impermissible. Therefore, it will not be correct to consume crabs, calamari etc.

As with regards to prawns, there is a difference of opinion amongst the Hanafi Jurists. Some classify it as fish and hence consider it Halaal. Those creatures that are that are identical to the prawn like langoustines, shrimps etc. will be regarded as the same.
