Not fasting because of an exam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

I missed a fast because I had an exam and days prior to the exam whilst practicing, my performance will low during fasting periods. Alhamdulllah I did well in the exam but I’m not confused as so many people have told me I have sinned and taken a short cut. I made Salaah tul Istkharah just before suhoor on that day I missed it. What shall I do?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Not fasting because of an exam is not considered a valid excuse to miss a fast in the Month of Ramadhan. You have committed a transgression and you should seek Allah’s forgiveness.

You should do qadha of the fasts which you have missed. There is no need to give a kaffarah (expiation) as that only becomes obligatory if one intentionally ate, drank or engaged in sexual intercourse during a fast in the month of Ramadhan. (Kitabul Fiqh p.906 v.1)
