I have heard from some brothers that we can say “Subhana rabbiy al ala” more than 3 times when in sajdah. Is this obtained from some hadith? If yes, can you point me to the hadith?

It is recorded in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Abi Dawud and ibn Majah that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “When one of you bows in ruku` and says therein Subhana Rabbiyal Azim thrice then his ruku` is complete – and that is the least of it. When one of you prostrates in sajda and says therein Subhana Rabbiyal A`la thrice then his sajda is complete – and that is the least of it. “
The Fuqaha have deduced from this hadith that the sunna is complete by reciting the tasbih thrice. They have also stated that it is preferable to recite it more than thrice ending on an odd number. (Maraqi al-Falah and its Hashiya p214)
حدثنا عليّ بن حُجْرٍ أخبرنَا عيسى بنُ يونسَ عن ابنِ أبي ذئبٍ عن إسحاقَ بنِ يَزيدَ الهُذَليّ عن عَوْنِ بنِ عَبْدِ الله بن عُتْبَةَ عن ابنِ مسعودٍ أن النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : ” إذا رَكعَ أحدُكُم فقَالَ في ركوعِه : سبحانَ رَبّيَ العظيم ثلاث مراتٍ فقد تمّ ركُوعُهُ، وذلك أدناهُ . وإذا سجدَ فقالَ في سجودهِ : سبحانَ رَبّيَ الأعْلَى ثلاثَ مرّاتٍ، فقد تمّ سجودُهُ، وذلك أدناه “.
و في مراقي الفلاح :
(و) يسن(تسبيحه) أي الركوع(ثلاثاً) لقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم”إذا ركع أحدكم فليقل ثلاث مرات سبحان ربي العظيم وذلك أدناه وإذا سجد فليقل سبحان ربي الأعلى ثلاث مرات وذلك أدناه” أي أدنى كماله المعنوي وهو الجمع المحصل للسنة لا اللغوي والأمر للاستحباب فيكره أن ينقص منها ولو رفع الإمام قبل إتمام المقتدي ثلاثاً فالصحيح أنه يتابعه، ولا يزيد الإمام على وجه يمل به القوم وكلما زاد المنفرد فهو أفضل بعد الختم على وتر
