Husband and Wife Burials, And a Great Wali

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is it permissible to buy your grave in advance, as you can do here from some of the Islamic graveyards?  Also, can the husband and wife be buried in plots next to each other?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

1. Yes, you can buy your grave in advance. There is nothing wrong with it.

2. Yes, husband and wife can be buried next to each other. The wives of many scholars are buried right next to them, from what I have seen in Damascus and Istanbul. The most memorable case was Mawlana Ahmad Dia’ al-Din al-Kumushkhanawi, a great hadith master and Naqshabandi murshid (who used to say, “I am Naqshabandi of tariqa, and Shadhili in influence”), whom Imam Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari called the mujaddid of the Ottoman lands at the turn of the 14th Islamic century (120 years ago). His grave is radiant light.

Wassalam,
Faraz.
