Can I read from the Quran while praying the night prayer?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

While praying the night prayer, can you read off of the Quran to make the prayer longer if you havn’t memorized alot of Surahs ???

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

This not permitted in the Hanafi school, as it is (a) extraneous action foreign to the prayer; and (b) not established from the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who commanded us to, “Pray as you have seen me pray.” [Bukhari]

Rather, one should pray with what one has memorized of the Qur’an, and then recite the Qur’an outside of prayer if one seeks lengthy recitation or completion of the Qur’an. This too is a tremendous spiritual act.
And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
