The short method of making up (Qadha) Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. Is the shortened method of making up Qadha Salaahs permissible? In Ruku and Sajdah, Suhaana Rabbiyal Azeem and Subhaana Rabbiyal A’ala is recited once. Will the Qadha Salaah performed in this way be valid?

A. A Salaah cannot be valid without performing the obligatory (Fardh) and compulsory (Waajib) acts of Salaah and cannot be complete without performing the Sunnah acts of Salaah. Just as these acts are essential in performing one’s Salaah, the same applies to making up ones Qadha Salaahs. The method of making up Qadha Salaahs is the same as performing any other Salaah.

In the enquired case, to remain in the posture of Ruku’ and Sajdah for the duration in takes to recite the Tasbeeh of Ruku’ (Subhaana Rabbiyal Azeem) and the Tasbeeh of Sajdah (Subhaana Rabbiyal A’ala) once is compulsory (Waajib) and to recite it thrice is a Sunnah of Salaah. Whilst making up Qadha Salaahs, if one remains in the posture of Ruku’ and Sajdah for the duration it takes to recite the Tasbeeh of Ruku and the Tasbeeh of Sajdah once, although the Salaah will be valid, one will be deprived of the complete reward of the Salaah by abandoning the Sunnah of reciting the Tasbeeh thrice in Salaah. Hence, the Sunnahs of Salaah should be observed as well. (Nurul Idhah 1/57 – 340)
