Respected mufti.I am in a bit of a predicament and urgently need advice.my wife’s mother and sisters are in Canada. Her youngest sister is getting married.my wife has not seen her mother in about 8yrs.the trip to Canada is about 30hrs and is very costly for all 6 of us to go.my wife’s father and son is late.I’m the only available Mahrham.I have a business through which we survive.my wife wants to go alone with my infant son.I want to know if my Allah will be displeased with me if I send her alone.will it be a sin upon us and If anything has to happen to my motherin law Allah forbid the regret as well as living with that is upon me.I am also worried if anything has to happen to my wife going alone.as a male I understand but from her point it’s hard. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is not permissible for a woman to travel 78 kms or more alone. She has to be accompanied by her mahram or husband.[1] This is clearly understood from the following hadith:
“لا يحل لامرأة تؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر أن تسافر سفرا فوق ثلاثة أيام فصاعدا، إلا ومعها أبوها أو أخوها أو زوجها أو ابنها أو ذو محرم منها”
“It is not permissible for a woman, who believes in Allah and the final hour, to travel more than the distance of three days except that her father, brother, husband or mahram accompanies her” [Abu Dawud][2]
