Covering ankles with socks

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Someone asked me if you wear pants above your ankle then why you wear socks to cover it?

What is a good answer to this question?

Answer

Objections like these are a result of ignorance; be it innocent or blatant.

The prohibition of overlapping the ankles with ones garments applies to all clothing that drapes from above, and not the clothing worn from below, like socks, boots etc.

This is clearly understandable from the words used in the Hadiths that prohibit such.

See here for a detailed article on the topic.

Kindly refer to a reliable mufti/darul ifta for a ruling of fiqh (fatwa) if needed.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
