Du’a to recite when awakening at night in fear

Is this du’a correct to recite for insomnia?

A’udhu bi kalimatillahit tammati min ghadabihi wa ‘iqabihi wa sharri ‘ibadihi wa min hamazatish shayatin wa ay yahdurun

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Abu Dawud, Imam Ahmad and other Muhaddithun have recorded this du’a. Sayyiduna Khalid ibn Al Walid (radiyallahu ‘anhu) complained of nightmares/fear/loneliness . Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) advised him to recite the du’a in question.

(Muwatta Imam Malik, Hadith: 2737, Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3528, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 3889, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 57, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 24013, Sharh Ibn Raslan, Hadith: 3893. See the full Hadith here)

I have not come across this as a du’a specifically for insomnia. If a person is unable to sleep due to fear, then he may recite this du’a insha Allah.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
