A Du’a to recite to attain the fear of Allah Ta’ala

Please tell me if there is a short du’a I can recite to attain the fear of Allah Ta’ala? Please give me the meaning, transliteration and Arabic text.

Answer

You may recite the following du’a which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would often recite [as part of a longer du’a] when gathered with the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum):

اللَّهُمَّ اقْسِمْ لَنَا مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ مَا يَحُولُ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ مَعَاصِيكَ

Allahumaq sim lana min khasyatika ma yahulu baynana wa bayna ma’asika

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3502)

Translation

O Allah! Apportion for us your fear, [such a portion] that will intervene between us and your disobedience

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

In addition to reciting du’as, one should make a concerted effort to avoid sin. Frequenting the company of the pious, Allah fearing individuals is also an effective method of developing taqwa.
