Feeding the poor on the day of Aashura

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. Can one feed the poor on the day of Aashura and receive the same reward of feeding on the day of Aashura?

A. In general, whilst feeding or giving charity is rewarding, the reward of feeding on the day of Aashura is specific to feeding one’s family i.e. one’s dependants.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whoever generously spends on his family on the day of ‘Aashura, Allah Ta’ala will expand his sustenance (Barakah) for the rest of that year.” (Shu’bul Imaan)

Therefore, if one feeds others besides one’s dependants on the day of Aashura, one will not receive the specific reward of feeding one’s family on the day of Aashura. However, one will receive the general reward of feeding people. (Shaami 6/430)
