The status of consuming sand

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. A widow is finding it very hard to cope after her husband’s death. Somebody prescribed that she should take sand from his grave and drink it to make her emotionally stronger. Is there any basis for this and will it be permissible?

A. There is no basis in eating or drinking sand from the deceased’s grave in Islam.

In general, it is disliked (Makrooh) to consume sand. However, if by consuming sand, there is a fear of it being harmful to one’s health, one would not be permitted to do so. (Hindiyyah 5/340)
