What are some of the intentions for getting married?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Shaykh Ali ibn Bakr Sakran of Hadramaut has a beautiful supplication, in which he asks Allah for the highest of intentions in marriage. Among these intentions is:

1. Seeking the pleasure of Allah Most High

2. Following the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace)

3. To have children. Marriage is a means of multiplying rewards for bringing a soul into this life and also for raising the child in excellence so that he/she will be a righteous and pious individual.

4. To protect oneself; to preserve one’s dignity (affaf)

5. To find spiritual tranquility and serenity ( by improving one’s character).

These were discussed at length in the SunniPath Academy course on Having a Successful Marriage.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
