The intentions that people will have when performing Hajj

Kindly provide the reference for the following Hadith:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Soon the rich ones from among my Ummah will perform Haj for the sake of travel and holiday, the middle class will perform Haj for commercial purposes, the ‘Ulama/Qurra will perform Haj for the sake of show and fame and the poor will perform Haj for the purpose of begging”

Answer

Hafiz Khatib Al Bhagdadi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration in Tarikh Baghdad.

(Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 11 pg. 597)

However Ibnul Jawzi (rahimahullah) has stated that the Hadith is not authentic and most of the narrators are unknown. Hafiz Dhahabi (rahimahullah) states that this Hadith is false and baseless (batil).

(Al ‘Ilalul Mutanahiyah, vol. 2 pg. 565, Hadith: 928, Talkhisu Kitabil ‘Ilal Al Mutanahiyah, Hadith: 539. Also see Lisanul Mizan, vol. 4 pg. 421 -4136-)

This narration is also recorded in Musnadul Firdaws via a narrator who has been accused of fabricating Hadith.

(Musnadul Firdaws, Hadith: 8689. Also see Lisanul Mizan, vol. 5 pg. 119 -4669-)

The Hadith is not suitable to quote.

Nevertheless, we should all inspect our intentions before embarking on such a sacred journey.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
