Makeup Prayers: Giving the Adhan & Iqama

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Shaykh, you say that in qaza [makeup] prayers there is azan. But [a shaykh on the internet] says not, also in the Hanafi mazhab. He says:

It is Sunnat to call out the Adhaan for Qadhaa Salaat if the missed Salaat is performed with Jamaat. If a person is performing the missed Salaat individually, he should not call out the Adhaan. (Shaami vol.1 pg.390; HM Saeed)

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

The answer given is incomplete. It also misquotes Ibn Abidin al-Shami. The sound position in the Hanafi school, as Ibn Abidin explains, is that it is a confirmed sunna to give the adhan for the first makeup one makes in any session. After that, within the same session, one may omit the adhan, though the iqama remains a confirmed sunna. This of course applies to men; it is prohibitively disliked for women to give both adhan and iqama.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
