Difference between iddat in the Hanafi and Shaafi mazhab

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is there a difference between iddat in hanafi and shafi mazhab?

Bismillaah

A: In the case of talaaq, the iddat period according to the Hanafi Mazhab is the passing of three menstrual cycles and the iddat period according to the Shaafi’ee mazhab is the passing of three tuhr (three periods of purity from haidh). If the wife is pregnant, then the iddat period according to both mazhabs is till the delivery of the child.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
