Offering the nafl salah at home

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is it true that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would say some sunnats of salah in his home, so his home would be remain blessed?

If, so, can you cite the sahih narrations to back this up?

Answer

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) has encouraged that the nafl salats (which include the sunnats) be offered at home.

1. Sayyiduna Jabir (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘When any of you finish your salah in the masjid, let him stipulate a portion of this salah for his home too. For indeed, Allah Ta’ala will put good (khayr) in his home.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1819)

2. Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Thabit (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘O People! offer your [voluntary] salah in your homes. The best salah, after the fard [which is offered in the masjid] is the one offered in the homes.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 731 & Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1822)

3. Also see Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, hadith: 6516 for another Hadith on this topic.

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) also had a habit of offering his sunnat salats at home.

4. Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would offer his two rak’ats before fajr in the home

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1161-1171)

5. Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would offer four rak’ats before Zuhr in his home.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1245. Also see Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1180)

6. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would offer the two rak’ats after Maghrib, the two rak’ats after ‘Isha and the two rak’ats after Jumu’ah in his home.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 937 & 1180)

7. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) is recorded to have said that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘The [Nafl] Salah that one offers in the home is a mean of Nur (divine light)’

So lighten up your homes.

(Musannaf Ibn Shaybah, Hadith: 6521. Also see footnotes on Hadith: 699)
