What is the source of this tradition?
‘Nothing can change qada [al-mu’allaq]. Only du’a can change it; and only favours/goodness can lengthen one’s lifetime.”
Answer
This is recorded by the following Imams:
Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2139, Tahawi in Mushkilul Athar, Hadith: 3068 and Tabarani (rahimahumullah) in Al-Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 6128 on the authority of Sayyiduna Salman Farisi (radiyallahu’anhu).
Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has graded this Hadith as sound (hasan gharib).
This Hadith is also recorded on the authority of Sayiduna Thawban (radiyallahu’anhu) by Imams: Ibn Majah, Hadith: 90, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 30488 and Ibn Hibban (rahimahumullah) in his Sahih, Hadith: 872- Al-Ihsan.
A simple explanation of the above Hadith would be: If one’s qada does change and his lifespan does increase, it was definitely known to Allah Ta’ala and only allowed to occur by His Will and Command.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
