Honouring the elderly

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is this Hadith authentic?

‘Part of glorifying Allah is honouring the grey-haired [elderly] Muslim.’

Answer

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al-Ash’ary (radiyallahu’anhu).

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4810)

This Hadith has been declared sound (hasan) by Imams:

Nawawi, Dhahabi, ‘Iraqi and Ibn Hajar (rahimahumullah).

(Riyadus Salihin, Hadith: 354, Mizanul I’tidal, number: 10543 Talkhisul Habir, Hadith: 762. Also see footnotes of Shaykh ‘Awwamah (hafizhahullah) on Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 22353)

This is a great merit for the elderly Muslims, and needs much attention. Unfortunately, the elderly are increasingly being ignored, and neglected.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
