I know that Surah Fatihah can be recited to cure scorpion stings from the Hadith of Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri.
But can Surah Fatihah be used to cure all illnesses and health problems in general (other than scorpion stings) as well? If so, please cite the Hadith and it’s authenticity.
Yes, it can.
The Hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu’anhu) you refer to, is sufficient proof for this.
In that Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) was amazed at the knowledge of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu’anhu) and enquired:
‘How did you know that [Surah Fatihah] was a ruqyah? Take the sheep, and allot me a share as well.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2276 and 5736 – Chapter of using Surah Fatihah as a ruqyah for illnesses)
Take note that Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has also understood this to be for general illnesses, and not just for scorpion bites.
The word Ruqyah, refers to a recital to treat any illness.
Another clear narration
In addition to the above, the following Hadith also proves the same:
‘Abdul Malik ibn ‘Umayr (rahimahullah) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:
’Surah Fatihah is a cure for every illness’
(Sumani Darimi, Hadith: 3413 and Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 2154)
This Hadith -when coupled with the one in question- is authentic.
