Every Nabi had an accepted du’a

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

In the narration of Sahih Muslim, Chapter 86, Hadith: 199 (493)

..li kuli nabiyyin d’awatun da’a biha fi ummatihi fastujiba lahu..

Does it appear in the narration what du’as the various Ambiya (‘alayhimus salam) made?

Answer

The Hadith in question also appears in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6304-6305.

Translation: Every Prophet made a du’a that was accepted. I have reserved mine to intercede for my Ummah on the day of Qiyamah.

Firstly, it should be noted that this refers to specific du’as of the Prophets that were guaranteed acceptance. It does not mean, that no other du’a of their’s were accepted.

Secondly, with regards to the content of these du’as, some Hadith commentators said this could refer to du’as they made for themselves or their nations.

Hafiz Ibn Hajr (rahimahullah) has given some possible examples that follow:

Nabi Nuh’s (‘alayhis salam) du’a:

‘O Allah do not leave a single non believer on earth.’

(Surah Nuh, Ayah: 26)

Nabi Zakariyya (‘alayhis salam):

‘Grant me an heir.’

(Surah Maryam, Ayah: 5)

Nabi Sulayman (‘alayhis salam):

‘O my Rabb, grant me a kingdom that none after me shall receive.’

(Surah Sad, Ayah: 35)

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 6304)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
