Use of Alcohol

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

1Assalamualaikum brother kindly tell me it is ok to use perfume having benzyl benzoate or benzyl cinnamate or cinnamal columorin or alcohol in the perfume is it halal ? What is the sunnah perfumes Rasullullah Salallahualaihiwasalams

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

  1. The use of perfumes that contain alcohol derived from dates or grapes are not permitted for usage.

They are impure and if used, they will compromise the validity of one’s Ṣalāh.

On the other hand, synthetic alcohol is pure and its usage has been permitted; hence, Ṣalāh whilst wearing perfume containing such alcohol will be valid.

Many a time, it becomes difficult to distinguish between impure/impermissible and synthetic alcohol.

Therefore, as a precaution, one may consider wearing perfumes that are alcohol-free, since they are widely available.

  1. It has been recorded that the Prophet ﷺ used musk and amber.
