Continuous urine drops and Istibraa

Question

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

I hope this message finds you in good health. I would like to find out what is the ruling on urine falling on clothing despite taking utmost caution after one is done relieving themselves.

Jazak Allah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother in Islam,

You refer to the urine drops after relieving one’s self.

After relieving one’s self, it is necessary for one to practice Istibraa. [1]

Istibraa is taking the appropriate actions to ensure all urine has exited the body. [2]

The most effective way to of doing Istibraa is to place one’s fingers on the area just below the scrotum and press that area while moving one’s hand upwards. One should continue doing this several times, until all the remaining drops of urine are discharged from the urethra. Different people need to adapt different methods depending on their personal situation. You may also try coughing which would assist in removing any drops of urine left.

If you are in the habit of experiencing doubts and you are not certain about the urine drops, then you may sprinkle water around your private parts or underpants and attribute the wetness to the water.

Consider the following hadeeth:

‏ جَاءَنِي جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ فَانْتَضِحْ

Nabi () said: ‘‘Jibraeel came to me and said: ‘O Muhammad! When you perform wudhu then sprinkle water over the private part’’

(Sunan-Tirmithy, Kitaabut- Taharah)
