Doubts in performing two sajdahs

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Doubts in performing two sajdahs

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

If a person’s doubt arises after finishing the Salah, then such a doubt will not be taken into consideration, unless one is certain he has left out the sajdah.

There is a principle in Islamic jurisprudence which is:

“Certainty is not lifted by a doubt.” (Al Ashbah Wan Nadhair p.60)

If the doubt of performing one or two sajdah’s arises during the salah then there are two rulings:

1.      One should act upon his predominant view. (Zann Ghalib)

2.      If one does not have a predominant view then he is to take with the minimum that he knows he has completed i.e one sajdah and perform another sajdah.

In both rulings one is required to do sajdah sahwe at the end. (Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p.418 v.4 & Raddul Muhtar p.562 v.2)
