Question

I would like to know the correct Sunnat method of reciting Aayatul Kursi at night for protection. Some say we just recite it 3 times before going to sleep while others say we recite 3 times and make a blowing gesture around the house and others say we recite 3 times, then blow on a finger and gesture the finger around the house.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

There are many virtues of Ayatul Kursi, which can be found in the books of hadith.

Saiduna Ubayy Bin Kaab Radiallahu Anhu narrated that one day, the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam asked “O Ubayy! What is the most excellent verse of the Quran?” Ubayy Bin Kaab Radiallahu Anhu replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “In your opinion, what is the most excellent verse of the Quran?” Ubayy Bin Kaab Radiallahu Anhu replied, “Allah – There is no god but He”(i.e. Ayatul Kursi). The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam placed his hand on his chest and said, “O Ubayy Bin Kaab! May your knowledge be pleasant for you.” (Sahih Muslim p.271 v.1)

Saaiduna Hasan Bin Ali Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “He who recites Ayatul Kursi after obligatory salah is in the protection of Allah until the next salat.” (Tabarani)

Regarding your question, to blow over your hands and pass it over your body has been revealed regarding Surah Falaq and Surah Naas. Imam Malik (RA) narrates from Saaidah Aisha Radiallahu Anha that ‘’Whenever the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam suffered from an ailment, he would recite the Muwadhatain (Surah Falaq and Surah Naas), blow over his hands and then wipe his whole body with those hands.  When this pain became severe on his deathbed, I would recite the Muwadhatain, blow over his hands, and then he wipes them over himself because my hands could not be a fitting substitute for his blessed hands.’’

Therefore, it is best to just read Ayatul Kursi before going to sleep.
