Question:

Assalaamualaykum,

A girl did istikhaarah for a marriage proposal and saw in her dream that an old lady is giving her a bunch of green flowers, would this be classed as a good sign? Also, can the mother of this girl do istikhaarah too or is it only sufficient for the girl to only do istikhaarah .

Jazakallah khairan

Answer:

After one reads the dua of istikhara, Allah تعالى will enable that individual to make the correct decision. In essence, the person who does istikhara is seeking good from Allah تعالى and seeking refuge in Him from that which is evil. Hence, it is not necessary to see a dream or feel any inclinations. Simply perform 2 rakats nafl, then read the dua of istikhara. Thereafter, whatever decision you make, there will be good in it, irrespective of whether your heart inclines towards it or not, or whether you see a dream or not. Even if you act contrary to what you feel or what you saw in your dream, there will be good in what you decide.[1] Along with doing istikhara, it is advised that you consult those who are pious, possess knowledge of Islam, and are your well-wishers. In addition, ensure that your criteria in choosing a spouse is piety.

Since parents are generally involved in choosing a prospective spouse for their child, it is better that they also perform istikhara. However, in matters which only concern you, perform istikhara yourself. To have someone else perform istikhara on your behalf is contrary to the Sunnah.[2]
