Hanafi Eating Prawns

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: As a hanafi, what is the ruling of eating prawns? Like how often are we allowed to eat it?

A: According to the hanafi mathab only what is consirdered to be “fish ” from the ocean is halaal. There exists some type of difference of opinion as to whether prawns are from the fish species or not hence the divergent ulama views on this matter with some of our senior ulama proclaiming it to be halaal and some not. In light of the difference amongst our ulama the safest option would be to exercise caution and to abstain.

And Allah knows best.
